Meeting with LDPR leader Vladimir Zhirinovsky

July 27, 2015, The Kremlin, Moscow

Vladimir Putin met with leader of the Liberal Democratic Party of Russia (LDPR) Vladimir Zhirinovsky.

Mr Putin and Mr Zhirinovsky discussed the results of the State Duma’s spring session, developing Russia’s Far East, standardisation in the construction sector, and other current issues.

Mr Zhirinovsky said that the amnesty proclaimed by the State Duma to mark the 70th anniversary of Victory was one of the spring session’s most important decisions.

Mr Zhirinovsky said there is a need to humanise Russia’s criminal law. In his view, less serious offenders should receive lighter forms of penalties and be sent to more humane corrections facilities, such as penal settlements.

Developing Russia’s Far East was also a subject of discussion. Mr Zhirinovsky said that efforts are needed to put in place conditions that will encourage people to stay in the region, in particular military service personnel stationed at units in the Far East.

Mr Zhirinovsky also raised the issue of common standards in the construction industry and said there is a need for independent experts and a state expert evaluation bureau in this sector.

Mr Putin and Mr Zhirinovsky discussed the issue of using agricultural land for its intended purpose. Mr Zhirinovsky noted that if all agricultural land was actually used for farming, there would be a lot more local produce on the Russian market.

The meeting is one of a series of meetings the President is holding with leaders of political parties represented in the State Duma.
