On implementing Presidential instructions to include the memorial complex to the Heroes of the Battle of Stalingrad on Mamayev Hill in the World Heritage List

April 19, 2011

Following a meeting with the House Council of the Federation Council on November 5, 2009, Culture Minister Alexander Avdeyev was instructed to look into the possibility of including the memorial complex to the Heroes of the Battle of Stalingrad on Mamayev Hill in the World Heritage List.

A request to include the memorial complex on Mamayev Hill in the UNESCO’s preliminary World Heritage List was sent to the Commission of the Russian Federation for UNESCO.

The memorial complex to the Heroes of the Battle of Stalingrad was built in 1959–1967 and includes several major memorial installations. The centre of the whole composition is The Motherland Calls!, an 85-meter tall statue of a woman with a sword raised high in the right hand. The statue stands at the top of the Mamayev Hill, high above the city, and is unique from the engineering point of view. Reburied there are 34,505 soldiers who defended Stalingrad. The memorial complex is on the list of Russia’s federal monuments.
