Dmitry Medvedev sent greetings to participants and guests at the celebrations dedicated to the Day of Slavic Writing and Culture.
The telegram reads, in part:
“This celebration reminds us of the common origins of the Slavic languages. The alphabet created by the great Christian saints – brothers Cyril and Methodius – opened the way to the enlightenment and development of the multifaceted Slavic culture that has united many peoples for centuries.
Today’s celebrations are occurring during the Year of Historical and Cultural Heritage promulgated throughout the CIS. The Russian language, which has remained the main means of international communication in the Commonwealth, contributed to strengthening of humanitarian dialogue, cooperation, and mutual understanding between people.
I am certain that celebrating the Day of Slavic Writing will continue to help educate young people about the values of their native culture, teaching a respectful attitude toward one’s language.”
