Congratulations to Literaturnaya Gazeta

April 22, 2014

Vladimir Putin congratulated the editorial staff of the revived Literaturnaya Gazeta weekly on the 85th anniversary of its first issue.

The message reads, in part:

“You should rightly be proud of the history of one of the oldest and best known national publications. The most outstanding writers and poets worked in various years with the Literaturnaya Gazeta, which was always at the centre of the country’s public and literary life and enjoyed invariable attention on the part of its readers.

It is very important for you to retain the continuity and to enrich the creative and educational traditions of your predecessors with new interesting projects, plans and ideas.”

Literaturnaya Gazeta considers itself the successor of the paper of the same name founded in 1830 with the participation of Alexander Pushkin. The first edition of the new Literaturnaya Gazeta came out on April 22, 1929, on the initiative of Maxim Gorky. Over the years, the weekly has gone beyond the framework of purely literary topics to become one of the most popular publications in the country that raises the most topical issues of public concern.
