Given the enormous significance of Marius Petipa’s artistic work in Russian and global culture and given the 200^th anniversary of his birth coming up in 2018, the President resolved to accept the suggestion by the Government of the Russian Federation to celebrate the 200^th anniversary of Marius Petipa’s birthday in 2018.

Corresponding instructions have been given to the Government of the Russian Federation.

Marius Petipa was a principal dancer, choreographer, theatre professional and instructor. Born in France, Marius Petipa worked in Russia beginning in 1847, where ballet art in the second half of the 19^th century is typically referred to as “Petipa’s ballet.” Many of his productions remain in the modern repertoire as outstanding examples of choreographic legacy.
