Meeting with Russian animators

May 31, 2017, The Kremlin, Moscow

Vladimir Putin met with representatives of the leading Russian animation studios, including Soyuzmultfilm, Melnitsa, Riki, Animaakkord, Vizart and KinoAtis. The meeting focused on the problems and prospects of the animation industry in Russia.

Today, there are about 50 animated studios in Russia, most of which make original animated works. Ten studios regularly produce full-length animated films and series.

President of Russia Vladimir Putin: Good afternoon, friends and colleagues,

We are meeting on the eve of International Children's Day. But we well know – and you know this very well – that animated films are designed not only for children. This is a significant part of Russian filmmaking, which has a long history and great traditions. Ours is probably among the oldest in the world – it will mark 105 years in 2017.

Nevertheless, a significant part of what you make is devoted to young people, children. In such a bright, skilful and beautiful way, you teach children to understand life, to distinguish truth from falsehood, good from evil. This is a very important job, and the way our artists and animators do it, of course, often amazes.

As we know, recent years have been quite difficult. And these difficulties have not been overcome yet, and today we will talk about them. But still, the national animation industry is regaining its niche both in Russian and foreign filmmaking, as evidenced by various awards, victories and achievements.

I would like to discuss with you today the current state of the industry and listen to your assessments. For this I invited my colleagues, the Minister, my adviser on culture, and Deputy Chief of Staff of the Executive Office. We are at your disposal and will try to respond to your concerns, plans and aspirations not in today’s conversation but in our future work.
