October 2, 2014

Vladimir Putin had a telephone conversation with Federal Chancellor of Germany Angela Merkel on the German side’s initiative.

The two leaders continued exchanging views on the developing situation in Ukraine, stressing the importance of strict adherence to the Minsk peace agreements: first and foremost, the ceasefire, withdrawal of heavy weapons by both sides and effective monitoring of the situation through the  OSCE. Vladimir Putin emphasised the importance of not allowing more attacks on civilian facilities by Ukrainian units in southeast Ukraine.

The two heads of state called for the quick finalisation and implementation of the agreements concerning the Ukrainian gas problem.

Mr Putin and Ms Merkel also touched on matters of international cooperation in countering terrorism, first and foremost originating from the Islamic State radical group.

In addition, the two leaders discussed cooperation in fighting the Ebola epidemic.

The heads of state agreed to maintain a dialogue at various levels, including during the Asia-Europe Meeting (ASEM) Summit, which will be held on October 16–17 in Milan.
