The relevant statement was signed by Russian and Norwegian foreign ministers. The Joint Statement issued by Dmitry Medvedev and Jens Stoltenberg also emphasizes significant progress in resolving the issue.

The Joint Statement's international section noted that Norway is ready to engage in constructive discussions facilitated by the President of Russia's initiative on developing a new European security treaty. Norway also supports Russia's accelerated accession to the WTO and a constructive dialogue between energy producers, consumers and transit countries.

The document identifies potential areas for further cooperation on the international stage, including in the sphere of nuclear non-proliferation and combating global climate change. The statement explicates the positions of Russia and Norway on various issues, in particular on the Iranian nuclear problem, the situation in the Middle East and Afghanistan.

The statement further stresses that Russia and Norway are satisfied with cooperation between their fishing industries, and emphasizes the importance of continuing and strengthening trade and economic cooperation. To this end the statement recommends the establishment of a Russian-Norwegian Business Council.

Russia and Norway will work together to ensure environmental protection in the Barents Sea, the document reads. The Russian party highly appreciates Norway's support in dismantling nuclear submarines decommissioned from the Russian Navy, and in the construction and restoration of facilities designed for temporary storage of radioactive waste in Murmansk Region. Russia also committed to taking necessary measures to reduce emissions when producing nickel in that border region.

The development of trade and economic relations occupied an important place in Russian-Norwegian talks. Dmitry Medvedev referred to sectors such as oil and gas, shipbuilding, marine equipment manufacturing, information technology and telecommunications as promising for future cooperation. The parties discussed the possibility of expanding their cooperation into innovative spheres.

In addition to the joint statement made by Russia's President and Norway's Prime Minister, and statements on the delimitation of maritime boundaries, a number of inter-departmental agreements in fields such as education, energy efficiency, renewable energies, hydrometeorology and management training were signed.
