Dmitry Medvedev sent condolences to Acting President of Nigeria Goodluck Jonathan following the death of Nigerian President Umaru Yar'Adua.
The President’s message reads, in part:
”It was with deep regret that I learned of the sad news of the passing of President of Nigeria Umaru Musa Yar'Adua.
President Umaru Musa Yar'Adua made an invaluable contribution to strengthening Nigeria's democratic foundations and international authority, as well as outlined the main directions for further sustainable economic development. His measured and constructive domestic policies contributed to stability and peace in the country.
I knew President Umaru Musa Yar'Adua as a great friend of Russia's, a firm supporter of cooperation between our two countries, and someone who did a great deal to expand and deepen Russian-Nigerian relations.
In this hour of darkness, on behalf of the people of Russia and myself, I would like to express the words of support, heartfelt sympathy and condolences to you, the Nigerian leadership, Mr Yar'Adua's family, and the friendly people of Nigeria.“
