Upon completion of President of Russia’s visit to Syria, Dmitry Medvedev and President of Syria Bashar al-Assad met with the leader of Hamas political bureau Khaled Mashal.
The President of Russia emphasised the importance of quickly restoring Palestinian unity and reaching an agreement between Fatah and Hamas based on the Palestine Liberation Organisation’s platform, and also further strengthening this platform.
The leaders emphasised the importance of constructive mediation in order for these efforts to succeed. They noted the need to realise a two-state solution, with a functional Palestinian state living peacefully and securely side-by-side with Israel.
The international legal framework for Palestinian-Israeli reconciliation was confirmed. The leaders gave particular attention to the grave humanitarian situation in the Gaza Strip. The Russian side confirmed its position of providing assistance to Gaza inhabitants and taking measures to loosen the blockade, as well as offering aid in delivering humanitarian supplies and construction materials to Gaza in accordance with the decisions of the Middle East Quartet, adopted at the ministerial meeting in Moscow on March 19, 2010.
