Vladimir Putin congratulated Gorokhovets residents on the town’s 850th anniversary.
The message reads, in part:
“One of the oldest towns in the land of Vladimir, Gorokhovets is renowned for its rich heritage, its unique architectural and artistic landmarks. It is rightly considered a historical gem of Russia.
The town played a significant role throughout the centuries in strengthening Russia’s statehood and developing industry, trade, and crafts. It was also a witness to many crucial events. It was from his estate in Gorokhovets that Prince Pozharsky went to Nizhny Novgorod to lead the 1612 people’s militia.
Supporting small historic towns is our common responsibility, and it is encouraging that while preserving its identity Gorokhovets is focused on the future: expanding its tourism potential and positioning itself as place for the kinds of public, educational and cultural initiatives that are needed now. Everyone visiting the town sincerely admires its beauty and the warm hospitality of its residents.”
