Svetlana Medvedeva discussed with the Patriarch the ongoing restoration work at the Naval Cathedral of St Nicholas the Wonderworker in Kronstadt.
St Nicholas Naval Cathedral is a UNESCO World Heritage Site considered to be the main church of the Russian navy, and its restoration should be completed by 2013, the 100th anniversary of its consecration. The cathedral was founded by decree of Tsar Nicholas II in 1903 to mark the 200th anniversary of the Russian navy and consecrated in 1913.
Svetlana Medvedeva took part in efforts to restore the cathedral and initiated the creation of a charitable fund to help renovation.
Patriarch Kirill, who visited Kronstadt in early March, told the First Lady about the restoration work progress.
The meeting with the Patriarch was also attended by Deputy Chief of Staff of the Presidential Executive Office Alexander Beglov and First Deputy Head of State Duma Foreign Affairs Committee Leonid Slutsky.
