Ivanovo Airport named in honour of Alexander Vasilevsky

Vladimir Putin signed Executive Order On Naming Ivanovo (Yuzhny) Airport after Alexander Vasilevsky.

In accordance with Paragraph 1 of Presidential Executive Order No. 681 of November 28, 2018, On naming certain geographical landmarks after persons who have performed special services to the Fatherland, the President has resolved to name Ivanovo (Yuzhny) Airport in honour of Alexander Vasilevsky.

Marshal Alexander Vasilevsky (1895–1977), twice awarded the title Hero of the Soviet Union, served as Chief of the General Staff during the Great Patriotic War (1942–1945) and played a central role in planning and executing nearly all major operations on the Soviet-German front.

Between February 20 and April 26, 1945, he commanded the 3rd Belorussian Front and led the assault on the city and fortress of Königsberg (April 6–9, 1945). In the latter half of 1945, Vasilevsky was appointed Commander-in-Chief of Soviet forces in the Far East during the campaign against Japan. Renowned as one of the most prominent World War II commanders, he served as USSR Minister of the Armed Forces and Minister of War in 1949–1953.
