Dmitry Medvedev signed Federal Law On Ratification of the Stockholm Convention on Persistent Organic Pollutants.
The Stockholm Convention on Persistent Organic Pollutants of May 22, 2001 was signed on behalf of the Russian Federation in New York on May 22, 2002.
The Convention is aimed reducing the use and production of, and subsequent full elimination of pesticides, polychlorinated biphenyls and other persistent organic pollutants that are specifically hazardous for human health and the environment.
The convention stipulates developing a National (State) Implementation Plan for its fulfillment.
In accordance with item 4, article 25 of the Convention, the Federal Law ofers the Russian Federation the opportunity to implement regulations wherein any new amendment to appendix A, B or C would come into force in the Russian Federation only after ratification, adoption, approval of, or accession to this amendment, which will allow for a comprehensive assessment of preparedness to accept the new obligations.
