In line with Vladimir Putin’s decision, the outside lighting at the Moscow Kremlin, the President’s official residence, will be turned off for an hour (from 8.30 to 9.30 pm Moscow time) on March 19 as part of Moscow’s participation in the international environmental awareness event Earth Hour.
More than 900 Moscow landmarks will turn off their external lighting, including St Basil’s Cathedral, the GUM department store, the State Historical Museum, and the Government building.
Earth Hour is an annual environmental awareness event organised by the World Wildlife Fund (WWF) to draw the international community’s attention to the need to protect our planet’s resources.
During the event, people all around the world voluntarily turn off the lights at the same time for an hour, and decorative outside lighting is turned off at various countries’ landmark buildings,.
Earth Hour is the biggest mass event in human history. In 2015, more than 2 billion people in 172 countries, including more than 20 million Russians, took part in Earth Hour.
Russia has taken part in every Earth Hour since 2009. In 2013, Mr Putin first made the decision to have the Moscow Kremlin take part too.
