Law ratifying Russian-South Ossetian intergovernmental agreement on medical assistance to military personnel

May 2, 2016

The President signed the Federal Law On the Ratification of the Agreement between the Government of the Russian Federation and the Government of the Republic of South Ossetia on Medical Assistance to Military Personnel.

The agreement was signed in Moscow on December 29, 2014.

This agreement establishes the legal framework for the provision of medical assistance to Russian and South Ossetian military personnel at medical and other military units and organisations of the Russian Ministry of Defence and at medical organisations of the Republic of South Ossetia.

In particular, under the agreement, medical assistance to the military personnel of the signatory states’ armed forces shall be provided free of charge, with the expenses to be covered by the respective parties, and shall include emergency and routine medical assistance provided in accordance with medical procedures and standards as per the legislation of the signatories.

Under the agreement, military personnel of the Armed Forces of the Republic of South Ossetia can undergo medical examinations at medical organisations of the Russian Ministry of Defence in keeping with the procedure stipulated for Russian service members. The cost of these examinations shall be covered by the Russian party.

This agreement has been signed for 49 years and will be automatically extended for five-year periods unless one of the parties notifies the other of its intention to terminate this agreement at least six months prior to its expiry.

The ratification of this agreement will enhance the social protection of military personnel of the Russian Federation Armed Forces serving at the joint Russian military base in the Republic of South Ossetia.
