Norms regulating the status of members of the Federal Assembly houses adjusted to new constitutional provisions

December 22, 2020

The President signed Federal Law On Amendments to Federal Law On the Status of a Member of the Federation Council and a Deputy of the State Duma of the Federal Assembly of the Russian Federation.

The Federal Law is aimed at adjusting the norms regulating the status of members of the two houses of the Federal Assembly of the Russian Federation to new provisions of the Constitution of the Russian Federation.

The law replaces the term “member of the Federation Council” with “senator of the Russian Federation” and introduces new categories of senators, namely, representative of the Russian Federation and President of the Russian Federation who stopped exercising his powers in connection with the expiration of his term of office or before term in connection with his resignation (following a corresponding decision).
