Maria Lvova-Belova continues her efforts to reunite children with their families

August 12, 2025

With the support of Presidential Commissioner for Children’s Rights Maria Lvova-Belova and through the mediation of the State of Qatar, an 11-year-old girl who had been temporarily residing in Ukraine was reunited with her mother in Russia.

Maria Lvova-Belova emphasised that, following the instructions of the President of Russia, efforts are ongoing to reunite children with their relatives in Russia, Ukraine, and other countries.

The Children’s Rights Commissioner said that the girl had previously lived with her mother in the Donetsk People’s Republic. In 2022, she was taken to Ukraine to visit relatives and was unable to return to Russia due to paperwork issues. After the family reached out to the Children’s Rights Commissioner, work on the case commenced.

Maria Lvova-Belova expressed gratitude for the support provided by the State of Qatar, the International Committee of the Red Cross, and representatives of the relevant agencies.

To date, with the involvement of the Office of the Commissioner for Children’s Rights, 26 children from 18 families have been reunited with relatives in Russia, while 112 children from 88 families have been reunited with relatives in Ukraine and other countries.

The Presidential Commissioner for Children’s Rights operates exclusively in the humanitarian sphere, guided by the best interests of the child, and consistently upholds principles of openness and transparency in efforts to protect families and childhood.
