Dmitry Medvedev and President of Armenia Serzh Sargsyan held talks in Yerevan. A number of agreements were signed, including on extending Russia’s right to station a military base in Armenia, and on construction of nuclear power plant units.
The two presidents adopted a joint statement following their talks. The document states, in particular, that Russia and Armenia support speedy resolution of the Nagorno Karabakh conflict through exclusively peaceful means and on a basis that is fair and acceptable to all parties. Mr Medvedev said that Russia will continue to do everything possible to reach a settlement in this conflict.
The two presidents witnessed the signing by the Russian and Armenian defence ministers of a protocol extending to 49 years the term of the agreement on Russia’s military base in Armenia. The heads of Russian nuclear agency Rosatom and Armenia’s Energy and Natural Resources Ministry signed an intergovernmental agreement on cooperation in the construction of new units for Armenia’s nuclear power plant. The two countries also agreed on reciprocal opening of trade offices.
Also signed were an intergovernmental agreement on readmission and an executive protocol on its implementation procedures, and a memorandum of understanding between the Federal Service for Military Technical Cooperation and Armenia’s Defence Ministry on cooperation in opening in Armenia certified service centres and joint ventures to provide technical maintenance and repair services for arms and military equipment.
Mr Medvedev and Mr Sargsyan summed up the results of the talks at a joint news conference. Mr Medvedev expressed great satisfaction with the agreements concluded and thanked Armenia for its aid in fighting the wildfires in a number of Russian regions.
Mr Medvedev also awarded state decorations to the heads of the Russian-Armenian University.
