Vladimir Putin had a telephone conversation with President of the Turkish Republic Recep Tayyip Erdogan at Russia’s initiative.
In light of the attempted coup against the democratically elected government of Turkey in the early hours of July 16, Vladimir Putin underscored Russia’s principled position that anti-constitutional actions and violence are categorically unacceptable in any country. He expressed words of sympathy to President Erdogan over the numerous deaths, both among civilians and law enforcement officers who stood against the plotters, and expressed his hope that constitutional order and stability will be restored in Turkey as soon as possible.
The President of Russia noted the significant increase in the number of Russian tourists travelling to Turkey following the lifting of restrictions, and expressed hope that Turkey will be able to ensure, to the maximum extent, their safety given the difficult situation there.
President Erdogan said that all necessary steps will be taken to do so.
The two leaders reaffirmed their intention to meet in person in the near future, as was discussed in a previous conversation.
