Greetings to participants of the World Conference of Compatriots

October 17, 2011

Dmitry Medvedev sent his greetings to participants of the World Conference of Compatriots.

The message reads, in part:

“This year’s forum is addressing a particularly topical issue – the status of the Russian language abroad and its place in global and regional processes. This confirms that genuine respect for our native language and a responsible attitude towards its future are of great importance for Russia and for our compatriots living abroad.

The Russian language today is a language of international and interregional communication and a unique and vivid part of the global heritage. It is also an effective tool for preserving the ties between the several millions of people in the Russian communities abroad and their historic homeland. Your work and active position help to develop the Russian-speaking space in the cultural, education and mass media dimensions. Your priorities include support for Russian language study and teaching and popularising Russian cultural and humanitarian traditions with their timeless foundation of lofty spiritual and moral ideals.

I hope that the discussions and exchanges of views at the conference will help to raise the Russian language’s role and status and develop multifaceted cooperation between Russia and the countries you live in.

I wish you successful work, good health, and all the very best.”

Mr Medvedev’s message was read out at the conference by Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov.
