Telephone conversation with President of South Africa Jacob Zuma

May 28, 2011

The President of South Africa talked about the results of the African Union's extraordinary summit on Libya held on May 25 and 26 in Addis Abeba. Also, special attention was devoted to the implementation of decisions on urgent deployment to Libya of a High Level Group (HLG) headed by Jacob Zuma.

Dmitry Medvedev expressed his support for the active role taken by African countries in quickly ending the bloodshed in Libya, finding independent (that is, without any external intervention or prescriptions) solutions by Libyans to their most pressing problems, and ensuring the democratic future of their country.

In turn, Jacob Zuma praised the Russian President’s decision to send his special representative to Africa, Mikhail Margelov, to Libya and expressed his readiness to cooperate with him via the HLG.

At the same time both sides noted that the close affinity of the views of the African Union and Russia concerning the Libyan crisis constitutes the foundation for such coordination.

During the conversation the two leaders also discussed other issues involving both bilateral cooperation and that within BRICS countries, including the election of a new IMF head, and the general representation of countries in the leadership of that organisation.

The telephone conversation was initiated by the South African party.
