Dmitry Medvedev congratulated President of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev on Azerbaijan’s election as a non-permanent member of the United Nations Security Council in 2012–2013.
The message reads, in part:
“I consider this decision – a first in Azerbaijan’s history – as a sign of the international community’s recognition of your country’s standing and reputation in international affairs. This success is the deserved result of the responsible foreign policy that you pursue based on the principles of the UN Charter and the rule of international law.
I am sure that as a member of the UN Security Council Azerbaijan will make an active contribution to strengthening the Security Council’s central role in designing and approving collective responses to the challenges and threats of today’s world. The Russian Federation is ready to pursue fruitful cooperation with the Republic of Azerbaijan in the Security Council based on the similar approaches our countries take to most issues on the international agenda.
I am certain that our trusting dialogue and our two countries’ close cooperation on the international stage will give new impetus to developing our strategic partnership and further strengthen the traditions of friendship and good-neighbourly relations between our countries and peoples.”
