Telephone conversation with British Prime Minister David Cameron

July 20, 2014

Vladimir Putin had a telephone conversation with British Prime Minister David Cameron. The conversation was at Britain’s initiative.

Mr Putin expressed his sincere condolences to Mr Cameron following the death of British citizens on board the Malaysia Airlines plane that went down on July 17 over Ukraine’s territory.

The President said that the armed conflict in Ukraine, including in the area where the disaster happened, is the root cause of this tragedy. Mr Putin expressed Russia’s willingness and desire to continue providing all necessary assistance so that ICAO can organise and conduct a thorough international investigation into the circumstances of the disaster. The President also noted the need to refrain from drawing hasty conclusions or making politicised statements before the investigation is complete.

The two leaders discussed the continuing serious internal political crisis in Ukraine and underscored the need for a swift resolution achieved through peaceful means alone. They noted that this peace process should have the international community’s backing.
