Opening ceremony of the First European Games

Vladimir Putin attended the opening ceremony of the First European Games in the Azerbaijani capital, Baku.

The First European Games are taking place on June 12–28, 2015. Taking part in the Games are more than 6,000 athletes, competing for 253 sets of medals in 20 different sports. The Games’ programme also includes one Paralympic sport – judo for visually impaired athletes. There will also be competition for four sets of medals in one demonstration sport – underwater swimming.

A total of 360 Russian athletes were selected for the European Games. They will compete in 30 different events.

The opening ceremony took place at Baku’s Olympic Stadium. Among those attending the event were President of Belarus Alexander Lukashenko, Henri, Grand Duke of Luxembourg, Prince of Monaco Albert II, President of Serbia Tomislav Nikolic, President of Tajikistan Emomali Rahmon, President of Turkey Recep Tayyip Erdogan and President of Turkmenistan Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov.
