Visit to the Naryn-Kala citadel and the Juma Mosque in Derbent

During his working trip to Dagestan, Vladimir Putin visited the architectural and archaeological complex of the Naryn-Kala citadel and the Juma Mosque in Derbent that have federal monument status and are UNESCO World Heritage sites. 

The President visited an exhibition of folk crafts at the Naryn-Kala historical and cultural site. Vladimir Putin was told about the development of tourism in Dagestan and the plans for expanding tourist facilities. Later, the President visited the Juma Mosque in Derbent.

The President was accompanied by Presidential Plenipotentiary Envoy to the North Caucasus Federal District Yury Chaika, Head of the Republic of Dagestan Sergei Melikov and Senator from the Republic of Dagestan Suleiman Kerimov.

The Naryn-Kala citadel was built in the 6th century and is part of Derbent’s ancient defence system. The Juma Mosque is one of the oldest in the world and the oldest in Russia. Most of the complex was built in the 8th century; the main cathedral mosque building, the madrasah and residential buildings have been preserved up to this day.
