Vladimir Putin had a telephone conversation with Prime Minister of Italy Matteo Renzi.
The two countries’ leaders exchanged views on the situation in Ukraine in the context of the presidential election held there on May 25.
They also exchanged condolences on the tragic death in Ukraine of Italian journalist Andrea Rocchelli and his companion Andrei Mironov, a Russian citizen. The President of Russia stressed the need to immediately stop the punitive operation conducted by the army in the southeastern regions of Ukraine and establish peaceful dialogue between Kiev and representatives of the regions.
Vladimir Putin and Matteo Renzi gave a high assessment to the current state of Russian-Italian interaction and the prospects for its development. They discussed specific issues of cooperation in various spheres, primarily in energy.
