The president gave the Primate of the Russian Orthodox Church a book, The Life of St Nicholas, written in the 19th century in Old Church Slavonic.
Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev also congratulated Patriarch Kirill on his name day.
Later in the day, Vladimir Putin visited the Cathedral of Christ the Saviour and venerated the relics of St Nicholas.
