Meeting with President of Turkmenistan Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov

September 3, 2011, Dushanbe

Dmitry Medvedev and Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov discussed the forthcoming visit of Turkmenistan’s leader to Russia, as well as bilateral economic and humanitarian cooperation.

Earlier the Russian President took part in a meeting of the Council of CIS Heads of State.

President of Russia Dmitry Medvedev: Good afternoon, Mr Berdimuhamedov.

I am very glad to have this opportunity to meet and talk with you, keeping in mind that we always have a great deal to discuss: bilateral cooperation, the development of economic ties and humanitarian projects, of which there are many in the Russian-Turkmenistani relations. Naturally, we must also give some thought to the future.

During a telephone conversation not so long ago, we agreed that you will pay a visit to the Russian Federation. I think we should discuss the details of that visit so that it has a busy and productive agenda that fully corresponds to the warm and friendly partnership relations that link the Russian Federation and Turkmenistan.

President of Turkmenistan Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov: Mr President, I am very grateful for our meeting today. Thank you.

You rightly said that for us Russia is a great power and our strategic partner. Indeed, cooperation between our countries has always thrived. Even looking at the most recent period, we can state that the results in trade and economic cooperation have been very good: over two billion in the past eight months, but the best is still to come, as they say, because the year is far from over. We have great many requests for Russian equipment.

Cooperation with the Russian regions has also been fruitful. As I told you during our telephone conversation, the Russian company Vozrozhdeniye has built the first ever flyover in Turkmenistan.

There are several other issues related to humanitarian ties: your idea was to hold a forum on innovation and progress in science and technology. We have held it and it was a great success.

We intend to maintain this pace of cooperation with the Russian Federation in the future. I would like to emphasise this once again and thank you for such excellent relations between Turkmenistan and the Russian Federation. Thank you.
