Trip to Severodvinsk

Dmitry Medvedev participated in the launch ceremony of a new generation nuclear submarine. The ceremony took place at the military shipyard of Production Association Northern Machine-Building Enterprise (Sevmash).

In his address, the Commander-in-Chief said that the new vessel would significantly increase combat capabilities of the Russian Navy's group of missile carrying submarines. Russia will continue to efficiently modernise its navy, the President said, constructing the most advanced ships and building up stock for the future.

Severodvinsk multipurpose nuclear submarine, which is unique in the world, was designed by the Malachit Marine Engineering Design Bureau in St Petersburg.

The submarine will undergo sea trials and is expected to enter into service in 2011. After that, it is planned that six more submarines of the same type will be built.

Following the float-out ceremony, the Russian leader was briefed on the retrofit of the aircraft carrier Admiral Gorshkov, which is being modified for Indian Navy, and given the main facts regarding the upgrading and trials of Project 11430.

In addition, the President viewed Zvezdochka rescue and salvage ship, which is especially fitted for search and rescue missions and raising sunken ships.
