Vladimir Putin had a working meeting with Chukotka Autonomous Area Governor Roman Kopin on the socioeconomic situation in the region.
According to Mr Kopin, gold mining, which is the main industry in Chukotka, has grown to reach 32 tonnes a year, which is about 12 percent of the overall gold produced in Russia. Among the area’s problems the Governor noted the area’s poor transport accessibility and spoke of the need to develop air transportation. The discussion also covered reindeer husbandry, which is not only an important occupation for Chukotka’s indigenous population, but also a source of meet for the region.
