Participation in Russian Geographical Society expedition

August 18, 2015, Sevastopol

Vladimir Putin took part in an expedition of the Russian Geographical Society (RGS) to explore ancient ships that sank in the Black Sea.

The President went down to a depth of 82 metres on board a submersible craft and examined a number of objects, including the remains of a Byzantine vessel that sank near the entrance to Balaklava Bay in Sevastopol.

This expedition was timed to coincide with the anniversary of the Russian Geographical Society’s establishment: it was founded 170 years ago, on August 18, 1845. It is one of the oldest geographical societies in the world.

After the submersion, the President congratulated the Russian Geographical Society on its 170th anniversary and talked to journalists about his impressions. Mr Putin also replied to several questions from the media.
