Malakhov Kurgan is one of the symbols of Sevastopol and of Russia’s military glory. It was twice the site of fierce battles to defend Sevastopol, first in 1854–1855, during the Crimean War, and then in 1941–1942, during the Great Patriotic War.

The President, together with Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev, laid flowers at the Eternal Flame, honouring the memory of those who gave their lives defending the city.

Mr Putin and Mr Medvedev visited the museum at the Malakhov Kurgan Tower, one of the few defensive fortifications still intact after the Crimean War. The museum’s exposition features documents, photographs, weapons and military uniforms from the Crimean War period and everyday objects used in the Russian army.

The President wrote in the distinguished visitors’ book: “Malakhov Kurgan is part of our country’s heroic history. It is Russia’s pride and glory. Thank you for looking after this wonderful piece of our historic memory.”
