Dmitry Medvedev visited Leningrad Nuclear Power Plant

May 29, 2010, Sosnovy Bor, Leningrad Region

Dmitry Medvedev inspected the main control centre of the plant and the reactor room. The President also toured the construction site of the second stage of the plant and was told about the technologies employed. Two power-generating units are being built there at the moment.

The Leningrad Nuclear Power Plant is located in the town of Sosnovy Bor, 80 kilometres from St Petersburg. The plant was commissioned in 1973 and is currently undergoing a phased upgrading of equipment to meet present-day safety standards. Construction of the Leningrad Nuclear Power Plant’ second stage is undertaken to replace the obsolete power generating capacities.

The President was accompanied in the visit by, among others, CEO of the Rosatom State Atomic Energy Corporation Sergei Kirienko, Deputy CEO of the Rosenergoatom Group Sergey Boyarkin, and Defence Minister Anatoly Serdyukov.

In a brief exchange with Mr Serdyukov the President announced the signing of the order on the establishment of a multipurpose medical centre at the Kirov Military Medical Academy in St Petersburg and instructed the Defence Ministry to submit proposals on the construction of the medical centre.
