Working meeting with Murmansk Region Governor Marina Kovtun

May 5, 2014, The Kremlin, Moscow

Vladimir Putin had a working meeting with Governor of Murmansk Region Marina Kovtun.

Ms Kovtun briefed the President on the start of a project to create the Murmansk transport hub. Implementing the May 2012 presidential executive orders was also a subject of discussion.

The Comprehensive Development of the Murmansk Transport Hub project aims to develop a year-round sea transport hub and cargo handling centre integrated into the North-South transport corridor. The project involves developing transport infrastructure on the west coast of the Kola Bay, including coal and oil terminals, developing railway infrastructure, and building a container terminal on the Kola Bay’s east coast. The ice-free seaport of Murmansk is where the Northern Sea Route starts its way to the Far East.

Ms Kovtun noted that much interest for the project is coming from companies that will be involved in developing the Arctic shelf.

The Governor asked at the meeting to be allowed to step down from office ahead of term so as to take part in an early gubernatorial election that will take place in Murmansk Region in September 2014.
