Working meeting with Governor of Sakhalin Region Oleg Kozhemyako

March 21, 2016, The Kremlin, Moscow

Mr Kozhemyako briefed Vladimir Putin on the region’s socioeconomic situation and key lines of development over the next five years. Organisation of the coastal fishing industry was also on the agenda.

Mr Kozhemyako said that the region plans to develop its own food production base and is carrying out projects to develop production of milk, pork, broiler chickens, greenhouse production, and grain silos. The region also has plans for priority development areas that will become home to all kinds of investment projects.

Developing the leisure sector’s possibilities and boosting the tourism sector are another priority area for Sakhalin Region. Work is already underway to build new ski tracks at the Gorny Vozdukh ski resort, so that the Russian national team will be able to train there for the 2018 Winter Olympics in South Korea. A ski and biathlon centre will also be built.

The region has resolved the transport accessibility problem. A regional airline has been set up in cooperation with Aeroflot and new planes purchased, making it possible to bring tourists to the region year-round.

The separate programme for developing the Kuril Islands is also underway and producing results. It covers development of infrastructure, the social sector, and aqua- and mariculture.

A pilot programme has been drawn up for developing the coastal fishing industry. Mr Kozhemyako proposed forming an interdepartmental commission within the region to decide on special zones where local people will be able to fish in the coastal zone.

Mr Putin gave the instruction to work together with the Government on improving and finalising the project.
