Concert of St Petersburg Combined Choir on the Day of Slavic Writing and Culture

May 24, 2014, St Petersburg

In 2014, the Day of Slavic Writing and Culture is marked by a single national concert. Vladimir Putin attended the performance of the St Petersburg Combined Choir in St Isaac’s Square.

Taking part in the project are over 200 groups: children’s choirs from general education and music schools, student’s and adult choirs, along with professional groups and veterans’ choirs – a total of 5,000 people. The youngest participant is 7, and the oldest – 92.

President of Russia Vladimir Putin: Good afternoon, friends,

I congratulate you on this great event – the Day of Slavic Writing and Culture. On this day, we commemorate the great educators, brothers Cyril and Methodius, who made an enormous, priceless contribution to the development of our language, who created a wonderful basis that unites all Slavic peoples.

Having begun as a religious tradition, this day is gaining more and more national significance, bringing together all the peoples of our country. The wonderful tradition of choir singing has taken shape right in front of our eyes; we hear songs that unite our great Russia because these songs are the very history of our people, its culture and soul.

Today we mark another event — the Name Day of Patriarch Kirill of Moscow and All Russia. Let us wish him many happy returns.

Happy holidays!
