The President will attend the opening ceremony of the restored Children’s Dance fountain, a symbol of the city’s military history, in the square in front of Volgograd’s railway station.
The statue survived the massive bombing of Stalingrad on August 23, 1942, when more than 40,000 civilians were killed by German air forces. That day, war correspondent Emmanuel Yevzerikhin took a picture of the sculpture of dancing children with the smoking ruins of the destroyed city in the background, and the picture went around the world.
