Deputy Chief of Staff of the Presidential Executive Office and Chairman of the Presidential Council for Interethnic Relations Presidium Magomedsalam Magomedov made a two-day working trip to the Republic of Tatarstan.
The main objective of the trip was to hold a seminar meeting with deputy governors of the Volga Federal District responsible for ethnic and religious relations.
The meeting addressed implementing the National Ethnic Policy Strategy through 2025. Per the President’s instructions, such events are being held in all the federal districts and will be made annual.
In opening the meeting, Deputy Presidential Plenipotentiary Envoy to the Volga Federal District Oleg Melnichenko noted that the district serves as an example of mutually respectful attitudes between different peoples, but at the same time, there are problems in ethnic and religious relations that require system-wide efforts by government authorities at various levels.
In his speech, Mr Magomedov spoke highly of Tatarstan’s experience in strengthening interethnic and interreligious unity. At the same time, he stressed that the situation with regard to interethnic relations overall throughout the nation is far from perfect since there is no common approach to implementing the National Ethnic Policy Strategy. Various agencies with differing functions and powers are responsible for this area of work in different regions, but every region now has consultative and advisory bodies on interethnic relations under the governor, and the process of organising training for state and municipal employees has been too slow.
The Deputy Chief of Staff called on regional heads to direct their efforts towards rapidly resolving priority objectives set by the President and instructed them to hold similar seminars with senior municipal officials.
Other participants in the meeting included President of Tatarstan Rustam Minnikhanov, Chairman of the State Duma Committee for Ethnic Affairs Gadzhimet Safaraliyev, member of the Presidential Council for Interethnic Relations Presidium Vyacheslav Mikhailov, and representatives of federal and regional ministries and departments.
The previous day, Mr Magomedov met with Head of Tatarstan Rustan Minnikhanov. In particular, the meeting addressed prospects for the region’s socioeconomic development, as well as strengthening interfaith and interethnic unity.
During the working trip, Magomedsalam Magomedov also met with members of the public at the Tatarstan Head’s mobile reception office, looking at appeals to the President, which primarily concerned housing and utilities issues and the region’s public amenities. Following the meeting, a list of instructions was sent to Head of the Republic of Tatarstan Rustam Minnikhanov. The fulfilment of the instructions is being monitored by the Presidential Directorate for Correspondence from Citizens and Organisations, as well as the office of the Presidential Plenipotentiary Envoy to the Volga Federal District.
