Chief of Staff of the Presidential Executive Office Sergei Ivanov held the final meeting of the organising committee preparing the celebrations of the 70th Anniversary of Victory in the 1941–1945 Great Patriotic War.
The meeting reviewed the preparations for the anniversary celebrations set to take place in Moscow and the Russian regions. Mr Ivanov said that all of the key organisational matters have been settled.
The Chief of Staff noted that the organising committee has held four meetings over the period from June 2014 to April 2015, the organising committee’s headquarters has held five meetings, and three presidential executive orders and seven resolutions were issued.
Mr Ivanov said that 43 events have been planned, including with foreign leaders and heads of government taking part. He stressed that the events will take place according to schedule.
Preparations are in full swing for military parades in 28 Russian cities. Russian military service personnel, arms and equipment will also take part in celebration events in Minsk, Bishkek, Gyumri and Tskhinval.
Mr Ivanov said that a public patriotic event – the Immortal Regiment procession – will take place on Moscow’s Red Square on May 9. Around 150,000 people are expected to take part. A show of historic military equipment will also take place in central Moscow.
All of Russia’s regions will hold a number of public patriotic events such as Memory Watch, We Remember Every Name, St George Ribbon, People’s Victory and others. The national Eternal Flame relay will begin on May 6.
Summing up the preparations for the anniversary celebrations, Mr Ivanov said that 1,500 commemorative medals issued by the Russian Pobeda (Victory) Organising Committee will be presented as a mark of encouragement to public figures, education, healthcare and social sector workers, cultural figures, schools, museums, hospitals, search detachments and veterans’ and youth organisations making a daily practical contribution to citizens’ patriotic education and supporting veterans. The medals will be presented at an official ceremony to those who have particularly distinguished themselves.
