Ruslan Edelgeriyev held talks with EU representatives on cooperation in combating climate change

July 16, 2020

Ruslan Edelgeriyev, Adviser to the President and Special Presidential Representative on Climate Issues, held online talks with EU representatives.

Russia was represented by Nikolay Kobrinets, Director of the Foreign Ministry’s Department of European Cooperation, and employees of the Permanent Mission of the Russian Federation to the European Union.

The EU was represented by European Commission’s Director-General for Climate Action Clara de la Torre, EU Special Representative for Climate Action Mark Vaneckelen, and Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary and Head of the EU Delegation to the Russian Federation, Markus Ederer.

The talks focused on prospects for Russian-European cooperation in combating climate change. The participants exchanged views and best practices with regard to reducing greenhouse gas emissions and adapting to the adverse consequences of climate change.

Ruslan Edelgeriyev noted the importance of a candid and open dialogue between Russia and the EU. Drafting the legal and regulatory framework for the implementation of the provisions of the Paris Climate Agreement was discussed.

An environmentally friendly recovery following the coronavirus pandemic was also touched upon. Ruslan Edelgeriyev pointed out the importance of taking into account the comprehensive nature of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development rather than being limited to isolated matters when developing measures to promote economic recovery.

The Russian participants drew attention to the unacceptability of using the climate agenda in unfair political actions and economic protectionism. Russia is also supportive of continuing environmental cooperation, which was curtailed at Brussels’ initiative.

The parties agreed to continue the dialogue on these matters.
