Ruslan Edelgeriyev met with UK Foreign Office representative Wendy Morton

November 17, 2020

Adviser to the President and Special Presidential Representative on Climate Issues Ruslan Edelgeriyev had a meeting with Wendy Morton, Minister for European Neighbourhood and the Americas at the UK Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office.

The officials discussed preparations for the 26th session of the Conference of the Parties of the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change, scheduled to take place in Glasgow, UK, in November 2021. They pointed out the importance of a detailed coordination of the functioning of market mechanisms in accordance with Article 6 of the Paris Agreement.

Ruslan Edelgeriyev drew the attention of the British side to the huge potential for the implementation of climate projects in the Russian Federation, in particular, in the timber sector. Mutual recognition of projects and coordination of standards would create conditions for the active involvement of Russian economic operators in international carbon markets. The sides mentioned the importance of exchanging experience and best practices in this area.

The Russian Federation’s consistent stand is that climate change discussions must be free from the influence of political differences and unilateral protectionist measures.

The sides expressed mutual readiness to continue cooperating on climate issues.
