Adviser to the President and Special Presidential Representative on Climate Issues Ruslan Edelgeriyev held a meeting, via videoconference, with US President’s Special Envoy for Climate John Kerry. The conversation launched interaction in matters regarding the climate with the new US administration.
The parties discussed progress in the implementation of the Paris Agreement, including its economic aspects, and stressed the importance of a non-politicised and balanced approach to this matter. Russia considers it important to achieve international recognition of project activities in the field of forestry as part of the rules governing the implementation of Article 6 of the Paris Agreement and also advocates the inclusion of nuclear energy on the list of low-carbon energy sources.
At the same time, Russia has reiterated its adherence to the Paris Agreement principles and does not support the creation of parallel negotiating formats. Multilateral climate cooperation initiatives should blend in the efforts to support the ongoing process under the UNFCCC.
The parties stressed the importance of approaching the Arctic as an area where Russia and the United States must combat climate change in a collaborative effort.
Ruslan Edelgeriyev and John Kerry agreed to continue the expert and political dialogue on climate, which meets the interests of Russia and the United States, as well as the entire international community.
