Deputy Chief of Staff of the Presidential Executive Office and Chairman of the Presidium of the Presidential Council for Interethnic Relations Magomedsalam Magomedov attended the 2nd Forum of Indigenous Peoples of the North, Siberia and the Russian Far East held in Salekhard, Yamalo-Nenets Autonomous Area, where he read out Vladimir Putin’s message of greetings.

In his speech, Magomedsalam Magomedov noted that the President always keeps problems of indigenous peoples under close review; this is an important part of the state ethnic policy aimed at preserving each ethnic group living on Russia’s vast territory.

He added that Russia has adopted more than a thousand legal acts at the federal and regional levels aimed at upholding the rights of indigenous peoples. Governments at all levels provide financial support to them on a continuous basis. The education system, adapted to their traditional way of life, is being improved within the modern context. Indigenous peoples receive support for their economic activities, and better access to healthcare.

Magomedsalam Magomedov noted that a wide range of important initiatives in this respect have come from the Russian Association of Indigenous Peoples of the North, Siberia and the Far East.

The forum brought together more than 300 participants who represent federal and regional authorities, public organisations, academia and the expert community.

As part of his trip, Magomedsalam Magomedov had working meetings with Presidential Plenipotentiary Envoy to the Urals Federal District Vladimir Yakushev and Governor of the Yamalo-Nenets Autonomous Area Dmitry Artyukhov. The discussion focused on current aspects of interethnic relations and socioeconomic development of the regions.
