Ruslan Edelgeriyev attends international meeting of climate ministers

July 26, 2021

Presidential Aide and Special Presidential Representative on Climate Issues Ruslan Edelgeriyev took part in a ministerial meeting in London on July 25–26.

Representatives from over 50 countries discussed urgent issues on the international climate agenda on the eve of the 26th session of the conference of the parties to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), which is to take place in November 2021.

The agenda included measures to counter global climate change, reach the long-term temperature goals of the Paris Agreement, step up adaptation to the unfavourable consequences of climate change and increase funding for this purpose. The participants focused on the rules of using the market mechanisms of the Paris Agreement’s Article 6.

Mr Edelgeriyev presented the Russian Federation’s position, which consistently advocates measures against global climate change. It emphasises the need for collective efforts to reach the long-term temperature goals of the Paris Agreement, and it intends to facilitate international negotiations within the UNFCCC framework.

Mr Edelgeriyev held a number of bilateral meetings on the sidelines of the event. He met with UNFCCC Executive Secretary Patricia Espinosa, UK Minister for European Neighbourhood and the Americas Wendy Morton, Japan’s Environment Minister Shinjiro Koizumi, US Special Presidential Envoy for Climate John Kerry, UN Deputy Secretary-General Amina J. Mohammed, and Alok Sharma who was appointed full-time President for COP 26, the 26th United Nations Climate Change Conference.

The Russian delegation, headed by Ruslan Edelgeriyev, also included Deputy Minister of Natural Resources and Environment Sergei Anopriyenko.
