Meeting of interdepartmental working group on climate change and sustainable development

February 22, 2022

Adviser to the President and Special Presidential Representative on Climate Issues Ruslan Edelgeriyev chaired the 37th meeting of the Interdepartmental Working Group with the Presidential Executive Office on climate change and ensuring sustainable development.

The meeting participants discussed measures to prevent and tackle wildfires, including efforts to develop target indicators of activities related to wildfire areas for governors of Russia’s regions. A corresponding instruction was previously given by the President of Russia.

The participants also reviewed the progress of work to develop subordinate acts to implement the Federal Law No 296 On Limiting Greenhouse Gas Emissions, of July 2, 2021. Out of 17 subordinate acts, a list of greenhouse gases has been approved by now, indicating those that are subject to state monitoring of greenhouse gas emissions and maintenance of emission inventories. Another 14 acts are planned for approval during the first and second quarters of this year.

The Federal State Statistics Service (Rosstat) presented a report on the work of the group of experts in information and statistics support for monitoring sustainable development goals. In 2021, the 3rd edition of the statistical compilation Sustainable Development Goals in the Russian Federation was issued, and efforts were made to expand the list of national indicators of the sustainable development goals, which currently contains 175 indicators. This year’s activities will include further work on developing a plan of measures to improve the official statistical records of the Russian Federation aimed at building data on indicators of sustainable development goals.

The participants adopted a 2022 activity plan for the Interdepartmental Working Group.
