Ten Russian children brought home from Syria with assistance from Presidential Commissioner for Children’s Rights

April 15, 2022

Presidential Commissioner for Children’s Rights Maria Lvova-Belova helped ten Russian children come home. The children had been at the Rozh refugee camp in Syria (six boys and four girls between 5 and 17 years old).

On the night of April 15, a Russian Aerospace Forces plane landed at Chkalovsky airfield near Moscow. During the flight, the children were accompanied by doctors, psychologists and staff of the Presidential Commissioner for Children’s Rights. Upon landing, they were taken to a hospital. After complete medical checkups and any necessary treatment, they will be taken to relatives, to new families.

Regional commissioners for children’s rights will help these families and children resolve any problems, including medical monitoring, health-building recreation, admittance to kindergartens and schools and the provision of social payments and allowances. They will be given legal support whenever necessary.

This mission was carried out through the concerted efforts of the foreign, defence and health ministries and their cooperation with the authorities in the Syrian Arab Republic.

The Commissioner for Children’s Rights coordinates the work of a special interdepartmental commission that helps repatriate children. Since December 2018, 374 children have been returned to Russia from armed conflict zones in the Middle East. Now all of them are under the wardship of relatives.
