Presidential Adviser and Special Presidential Representative on Climate Issues Ruslan Edelgeriyev took part in a ministerial meeting on preparations for the 27th session of the Conference of the Parties to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change, which was held in the Democratic Republic of the Congo on October 3–5.
The meeting provided an opportunity to outline possible ways of bringing countries together on key issues on the current climate agenda. These included launching a work programme to scale up mitigation efforts by 2030 and advancing a global adaptation goal within that programme’s framework, agreeing on a new post-2025 climate finance target, and developing an institutional framework to address the loss and damage from adverse effects of climate change.
On the sidelines of the event, the Presidential Adviser held talks with Chairman of the 27th session of the Conference of the Parties to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change, Foreign Minister of Egypt Sameh Shoukry. The officials concurred that the climate agenda must not be diluted by international peace and security issues and agreed to continue close bilateral cooperation to ensure the event would be a success.
Ruslan Edelgeriyev also met with Minister of the Environment and Sustainable Development of the Democratic Republic of the Congo Eve Bazaiba. The parties discussed opportunities for Russian-Congolese cooperation in energy, waste management and emissions markets, and agreed to submit and jointly work on the proposals for joint projects in these areas.
The 27th session of the Conference of the Parties to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change will be held from November 6–8, 2022, in Sharm el Sheikh, Egypt. Ruslan Edelgeriyev will head the Russian delegation at the event.
