Ruslan Edelgeriyev, Presidential Aide and Special Presidential Representative on Climate Issues, chaired the first meeting of the interagency expert group on Russia’s participation in the UN Convention to Combat Desertification in countries affected by severe drought and/or desertification, particularly in Africa.

The discussion focused on the key aspects of Russia’s national and international efforts to fulfil its obligations under the Convention. Participants also emphasised the importance of coordinating the activities of federal government bodies, the scientific community, and regional authorities to implement effective measures aimed at preventing land degradation and combating desertification.

The meeting participants are invited to the Agroecological Aspects of Protective Afforestation and Integrated Land Reclamation in Adaptive Landscape Farming Systems international scientific conference to be held in Volgograd on October 21–23.

The work of the interagency expert group will continue.
