Vladimir Putin visited Kazan, which is hosting the 27th Summer Universiade on July 6 through 17.
The President met with members of the Russian national team, congratulated the Universiade’s winners and medalists, and wished success to athletes who had not yet participated in the Games. Participants of the meeting included winners of competitions in freestyle wrestling, track and field, fencing, swimming, weightlifting and belt wrestling.
After the meeting, which was held at the Rowing Centre, the President learned about the work of the Federal Medical and Biological Agency’s mobile medical units. Their use enables the provision of specialised, expert medical assistance to athletes in the immediate vicinity of the competition venue. These unique systems will be used to medically assist Russian athletes at the 22nd Winter Olympic Games in Sochi in 2014.
Later, Vladimir Putin met with representatives of the International University Sports Federation (FISU) executive committee who gave a high appraisal of the Universiade and the athletic achievements demonstrated by sportspeople over the course of the competition. The discussion also addressed plans for developing student sports and various aspects of continued cooperation between Russia and FISU.
This is Vladimir Putin’s second visit to Kazan during the Summer Universiade. The President also attended its opening ceremony.
